Purpose: To allow teen-agers to explore issues of importance in their life by employing role playing and simulation techniques. The skills learned which are applicable in every phase of their life are: active listening, team building, problem solving, creativity and co-operation. All of the above add to their sense of personal esteem and enhance entreprenurial skills.
History: Originally developed by Howard Jerome and David Shepherd in New York (1972) as a medium for exploring issues and options for youth in the drug therapeutic community. Redesigned in 1975 as a high school curriculum in a game format. The Improv Games have become an institution in Canada with the yearly finals in Ottawa at the Arts Centre and covered by YTV. Currently 400 schools and a network of teachers and students are involved. Alumnae include lawyers, teachers, stage and film stars and an Alumnae Association is currently being formed.
