Audience: Student classes from grades one to eight
Class size: Approximately 20 to 30 students per class
Training Objective:
· To promote in young people a culture of peace
Training Aids:
· Poster/flip chart listing the six Values of the Manifesto 2000:
Respect All life
Reject Violence
Share with Others
Listen to Understand
Preserve the planet
Rediscover solidarity.
· Six Peacemaker Kits, one kit for each working group. (Each kit contains
modelling clay, beads, mirror, and some stuff)
· Six laminated cards describing the Value for each working group
· Value models that the athlete facilitator brings to the class
PART I:
· Classroom presentation/ question and answer
Get Acquainted Activity: (10 minutes)
· Athlete introduces himself or herself to the class
· Then describes his or her Olympic sport
· Describes training for the Olympics, and relates personal experiences
· Encourages students to ask questions
Breathing Exercise: (5 to 7 minutes)
· Do you know how to breathe? Who taught you?
· If nobody taught you, how do you know you're doing it right?
· Do you know why we breathe? (lead them to "feeding the system")
· What's the most important organ that we feed? (lead them to "the
brain")
· Scientific studies say that the brain operates at a low efficiency,
only 8% to 15%
· If your bicycle were operating at only 8% to 15% of its efficiency,
what would you do?
· Facilitator points out the importance of efficient breathing in sports
· How many of you would like to learn a breathing technique that makes
your brain operate more efficiently? (show of hands/ proceed only when all
students have raised their hands)
· Facilitator leads the class through the breathing exercise (Conspiracy
Booklet)
PART II:
· Six working groups, one for each of the Values
· Group receives a Peacemaker Kit and an instruction card
· Groups are asked to use materials from the kit to create, in a physical
form, some representation of the ideas discussed by the group
· Facilitator assists groups with their questions during the exercise
· 20-30 minutes
Group #1/ Respect All Life:
· All life is sacred. The Golden Rule.
· Group task = Create a symbol of the Value, Respect All Life.
· Prepare to show the symbol to the rest of the class and explain its'
meaning.
Group #2/Reject Violence:
· Stop Feeding the Warriors. Story of the Peacemaker.
· Group task = Create a symbol of the Value, Reject Violence.
· Prepare to show the symbol to the rest of the class and explain its'
meaning.
Group #3/ Share with Others:
· All receiving is for the purpose of sharing. Story of the symbiotic
relationship between plants and people. (relates to the breathing exercise)
· Group task = Create a symbol of the Value, Share with Others.
· Prepare to show the symbol to the rest of the class and explain its'
meaning.
Group #4/ Listen to Understand:
· Listen deeply. Honour the sacred, the grandfathers and grandmothers
of everybody.
· Group task = create a symbol of the Value, Listen to Understand.
· Prepare to show the symbol to the rest of the class and explain its'
meaning
Group #5/ Preserve the Planet:
· Proclamation re: spending. What do we buy?
· Group task = create a symbol of the Value, Preserve the Planet.
· Prepare to show the symbol to the rest of the class and explain its'
meaning
Group #6: Rediscover Solidarity:
· Develop allies. Team playing. Story of the meaning of wampum.
· Group task = create a symbol of the Value, Rediscover Solidarity.
· Prepare to show the symbol to the rest of the class and explain its'
meaning
PART III:
· Groups share their models, and their Value interpretations with the
others
· After each group presentation, the facilitator shares his or her
model with the class, and comments on, as necessary, the group's interpretation
of the Value.
PART IV:
Wrap-up/ Summary: (3 minutes)
· Facilitator asks questions relative to the framework of global learning.
